Pick your hotel by the subway map.
Beijing is huge and the sights are far apart. Pick the wrong area and you lose an hour or two on the road every day. Stay near a subway transfer station and most sights are a direct ride away.
How to judge an area
Look at three things: price, transport, and what's around you. Transport decides everything here. Always stay on a subway line, and better still near a transfer station where two or three lines meet, so you make fewer changes wherever you go.
Booking-app trick: search the station name, such as Chongwenmen or Zhushikou, then filter by walking distance. You'll see every hotel in that pocket at once.
The six areas, from most upscale to most local
1. Jianguomen · high-end and international
Lines 1 and 2 meet here. Line 1 goes straight to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, and covers Wangfujing and Xidan, the two big shopping streets; Guomao, the CBD, is two stops away. Line 2 is the loop line, so Qianmen and the Lama Temple are direct rides. It sits on Chang'an Avenue next to the embassy district, so the area leans business: international restaurants, malls, and the Silk Street Market one stop away. Hotels are mostly five-star and upscale business hotels, with some mid-range. Good if you're here on business or want a high-end international stay and budget isn't the issue.

2. Chongwenmen · when in doubt, stay here
Lines 2 and 5. Line 2 takes you straight to Qianmen, right by Tiananmen Square. On Line 5 the east gate of the Temple of Heaven is two stops away, and the Lama Temple is on the same line. Dongjiaominxiang, the old Legation Quarter, is a few minutes' walk, and Wangfujing is walkable, a bit over a kilometre. Malls and restaurants all around. Chongwenmen has the widest price range of the six, from budget chains to international five-stars. For families, groups with mixed budgets, or first-timers who don't want to get it wrong: choose Chongwenmen.

3. Dongzhimen · the airport line and nightlife
The Airport Express stops here: 25 minutes straight to Capital Airport, ¥25, about $3.50. Line 2 takes you into the city, and the Lama Temple and the Drum Tower area are easy rides. Next door is Gui Jie, Ghost Street, one of Beijing's most famous late-night food streets, and Sanlitun is one or two kilometres away, an easy evening walk. Hotels are practical and business-leaning, from budget chains up to upscale business hotels. If you're young, into nightlife, or catching an early flight after a short stay, Dongzhimen makes things easy.

4. Xizhimen · the Great Wall and the universities
Lines 2, 4 and 13 meet here, and Beijing North Railway Station is right downstairs. The high-speed train reaches Badaling Great Wall station in 30 to 40 minutes, tickets from ¥28, about $4. For the Great Wall this is the easiest place to stay. Line 4 strings together the Summer Palace, the Old Summer Palace, Peking University's east gate, Beijing Zoo and Xidan; for Tsinghua, get off at Yuanmingyuan and walk about 700 metres. Line 2 also gets you to the Drum Tower area, the Lama Temple and Qianmen. A big mall at the station covers food and shopping. Hotels are mostly mid-range business hotels.

5. Zhushikou · old Beijing at friendly prices
Lines 7 and 8, and Line 8 is the underground central axis. Qianmen is one stop away, with Dashilar and Tiananmen Square right outside the station, and the same line continues to Wangfujing, Nanluoguxiang, Shichahai and the Bird's Nest. Tianqiao is one stop the other way, a five-minute walk to the west gate of the Temple of Heaven. Line 7 connects Beijing West Railway Station at one end and Universal Resort at the other; for Niujie's street food, get off at Guang'anmennei and walk about 300 metres. Qianmen Street, Dashilar and Xianyukou are all nearby. This is where old Beijing still lives its daily life. Prices are lower than the centre, mostly guesthouses and budget hotels, plus some boutique ones.

6. Ping'anli · a night in a real courtyard
The most local, and to me the most special. This is hutong country, full of courtyard guesthouses, the siheyuan. Lines 4, 6 and 19 meet here. One stop on Line 6 is the north gate of Beihai Park, the next is Nanluoguxiang, and the Shichahai and Houhai lakes are walkable straight through the hutongs. Line 4 puts the Summer Palace and the universities within reach. It's a quiet, residential area with no big malls; daily needs are covered by small shops and convenience stores. Courtyard guesthouses vary a lot in quality, so compare a few before you book, and there are mid-range hotels around as a backup.

The one kind of hotel I'd avoid
Staying right next to a major sight. Hotels directly facing Tiananmen or Qianmen sound perfect on paper. They're expensive, and most of the restaurants and shops around them are built for tourists.
If everything is above your budget
On the same subway line, the closer you are to the sights, the more you pay. Move outward along the same line, to somewhere between the Third and Fourth Ring Road. Prices come down, and the subway still takes you everywhere.
